HSBC Launches Hong Kong Dollar Stablecoin for Retail Users

HSBC has begun rolling out its Hong Kong dollar-pegged stablecoin, HSBC RedCoin (RCHKD), to retail customers in Hong Kong through PayMe, its digital payment application. The launch allows eligible users to transfer the digital currency to friends and family and make payments at merchants that accept PayMe, extending the bank’s digital asset services into everyday transactions.

RedCoin is HSBC’s first stablecoin offering for retail users in Hong Kong and operates under a licensing and regulatory framework overseen by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA). The rollout follows the regulator’s decision to grant HSBC a stablecoin issuer license in April 2026.

Stablecoin Access Expands to 3.3 Million PayMe Users

HSBC is introducing RedCoin in phases, with more than 3.3 million PayMe users expected to gain access to stablecoin wallet functionality over the following days. Once activated, customers will be able to use the digital currency for peer-to-peer transfers and payments across a network of more than 100,000 merchants that accept PayMe.

The stablecoin operates on HSBC’s technology infrastructure and security systems. The bank said its design incorporates financial crime controls intended to comply with Hong Kong’s Stablecoins Ordinance, which establishes requirements for regulated stablecoin issuance and related activities.

HSBC Digital Assets Custody provides safekeeping services for RedCoin, adding a dedicated custody component to the offering. The arrangement reflects the bank’s approach of integrating digital assets with its existing banking infrastructure rather than treating stablecoin payments as a separate, standalone service.

The launch also follows testing involving regulators and prospective users. Nearly 100 HSBC employees participated in pilot exercises that covered the customer journey, including stablecoin creation, wallet activation and live transfers. The testing was intended to assess the service’s functionality before its broader introduction to retail customers.

HSBC Survey Highlights Demand for Faster Payments

HSBC cited findings from its survey suggesting that access through familiar applications, faster payments and quicker settlement are important factors influencing stablecoin adoption.

The survey also found that 53% of respondents believed Hong Kong dollar stablecoins could strengthen the city’s economic competitiveness. Respondents identified the potential for round-the-clock payments and support for trade, tourism and cross-border commerce as possible benefits.

Stablecoins are digital assets designed to maintain a relatively stable value by referencing a currency or another underlying asset. Unlike conventional payment systems that may depend on banking hours or intermediary processing, blockchain-based settlement can operate continuously, although actual transaction speed and availability depend on the network and service provider.

By integrating RedCoin into an established consumer payment application, HSBC aims to make regulated digital currency transfers more accessible while connecting stablecoin payments with its existing banking and merchant network.

Maggie Ng, HSBC Hong Kong’s chief executive and head of retail banking and wealth in Hong Kong, said the bank intended to help customers adapt to changes in digital payments through products supported by its banking capabilities and security infrastructure.

Mobile Banking and Tokenized Investments Planned

HSBC plans to add stablecoin wallet functionality to its HSBC HK Mobile Banking App later in 2026, potentially extending access beyond PayMe and integrating RedCoin more closely with the bank’s broader digital banking services.

The bank also intends to allow customers to subscribe to tokenized investment products using RedCoin. One planned offering involves a new share class of HSBC’s existing Hong Kong dollar money market fund.

Tokenization represents financial assets as digital tokens on a blockchain-based system. Integrating stablecoin payments with tokenized investment products could simplify the movement of funds into investment vehicles, although the availability and terms of these services will depend on their eventual implementation.

John O’Neill, HSBC’s managing director of digital assets and currencies, indicated that the bank also intended to extend RedCoin into wholesale, corporate and institutional services.

HSBC Broadens Its Digital Asset Strategy

The retail launch represents an expansion of HSBC’s digital asset strategy in Hong Kong, combining regulated stablecoin issuance, custody services and an established payments network.

The planned additions to mobile banking and tokenized investments suggest that the bank intends to develop RedCoin beyond person-to-person transfers and merchant payments. Its longer-term adoption will depend on customer participation, merchant usage, regulatory requirements and the delivery of the additional services.
