Nexon is intensifying its expansion into Web3 gaming through MapleStory Universe, a blockchain-powered ecosystem built around its long-running MapleStory franchise. The initiative is being led by Nexpace, the company’s Abu Dhabi-based blockchain division, as the iconic side-scrolling MMORPG celebrates its 23rd anniversary this year.
MapleStory has remained one of Nexon’s most recognizable gaming properties for more than two decades. As blockchain adoption and decentralized digital economies continue growing, Nexpace is positioning MapleStory Universe as a broader platform that merges gaming, digital ownership, artificial intelligence, and creator-driven economies.
Nexpace CEO Hwang Sun-young explained in a recent interview that the company spent the past year building the foundational infrastructure required to support its long-term Web3 vision. He indicated that the launch of MapleStory N helped establish a sustainable operating model supported by active users and ongoing revenue generation.
MapleStory N is a PC-based MMORPG operating within the MapleStory Universe ecosystem. Unlike traditional online games, the title incorporates blockchain technology and a play-to-earn model that allows users to earn digital assets through gameplay. Those assets can later be traded or converted into NXPC, Nexpace’s cryptocurrency token listed on several major crypto exchanges.
Play-to-Earn Ecosystem Gains Traction
According to Hwang, MapleStory N has achieved a stable mid-tier user base compared to other titles within Nexon’s larger gaming portfolio. Although it remains smaller than the company’s biggest live-service games, he reportedly indicated that the scale was sufficient to sustain long-term ecosystem growth.
The executive also suggested that monetization efficiency within the blockchain gaming environment had exceeded expectations because players felt stronger ownership over their digital assets. That sense of ownership reportedly encouraged users to spend more actively within the ecosystem.
MapleStory Universe has reportedly generated approximately $31 million in revenue and processed more than 150 million on-chain transactions since launching in May last year.
As the blockchain-based game ecosystem demonstrated sustainable traction, Nexpace shifted its attention toward what it calls MSU 2.0, the next development phase for MapleStory Universe. The upcoming expansion will heavily integrate artificial intelligence tools aimed at simplifying content creation for users and developers.
Hwang explained that the company is utilizing AI-powered coding technology to enable users to generate MapleStory-inspired games and digital content using simple text prompts. Through this system, users could potentially combine character abilities, merge monster traits, and build customized game elements without extensive technical expertise.
Accelerating the ecosystem into MSU 2.0. @MaplestoryU is heading toward an AI-powered future with the MapleStory IP open for everyone to build on.

AI-Powered Content Creation Becomes Central Focus
MSU 2.0 introduces AI-driven creation tools designed to let users build MapleStory-inspired games, characters, and content through simplified prompt-based systems.
The company described the AI integration as a gateway that would allow creators to access MapleStory assets and gameplay logic more efficiently. Nexpace believes this approach could significantly lower barriers for user-generated game development while expanding the overall ecosystem.
Another major component of MSU 2.0 involves establishing an on-chain builder economy through the Henesys blockchain network. According to Hwang, the system is intended to combine licensing, payments, and revenue settlement into a unified blockchain-based infrastructure.
Through Web3 smart contracts integrated into the Henesys chain, builders and creators would reportedly be able to focus more heavily on content production while automated systems handle payments and licensing arrangements in the background.
The company views the broader MapleStory Universe as a scalable digital ecosystem rather than a single game. Hwang noted that Nexpace has been discussing the possibility of expanding additional Nexon intellectual properties into blockchain-powered environments since last year.
Nexpace Eyes Broader Web3 Gaming Expansion
Nexpace plans to expand its blockchain ecosystem beyond MapleStory by integrating additional Nexon gaming intellectual properties into its Web3 infrastructure.
While MapleStory N is expected to remain a core component of the ecosystem, Nexpace intends to continue making its gaming assets and blockchain tools more accessible to users throughout 2026. The strategy reflects the growing convergence between gaming, blockchain technology, artificial intelligence, and decentralized creator economies.
