Matera Launches Workspace to Bring Digital Assets Into Banking

Matera has launched Matera Workspace, an application platform designed to help banks, credit unions and financial technology companies introduce digital assets without replacing their existing core banking systems. The platform combines ledger infrastructure, payment capabilities, custody integrations and trading functionality to support stablecoins, cryptocurrencies and tokenized financial instruments alongside traditional currencies.

The launch addresses a key challenge for financial institutions exploring digital assets: integrating new financial products with existing account systems, transaction processes and regulatory controls. Rather than requiring banks to assemble multiple technology providers or overhaul their core infrastructure, Matera Workspace brings several components together through a single integration.

Matera Workspace enables financial institutions to manage traditional currencies and digital assets within a unified banking environment, allowing them to explore new products without migrating their existing core systems.

Real-Time Ledger Combines Traditional and Digital Assets

At the center of the platform is Digital Twin, Matera’s real-time ledger technology, which already supports instant payments in production. The ledger is designed to record balances across different asset types, including U.S. dollars, euros, stablecoins, cryptocurrencies, and tokenized instruments.

This approach allows banks to display digital assets alongside conventional currency balances within the same account interface. For example, a customer could view USDC and U.S. dollar balances together rather than accessing a separate cryptocurrency account section.

The unified structure is intended to simplify account management and provide financial institutions with a consistent framework for handling different forms of value. It could also reduce the complexity associated with maintaining separate systems for conventional deposits and digital asset services.

Workspace combines Digital Twin with Matera’s X9.150 Secure Payment QR technology and ready-made custody integrations. The components connect to a bank’s existing core through one integration, reducing the need to coordinate separate vendors for ledger management, custody, payment functionality and trading infrastructure.

According to Matera, institutions can begin pilot projects without migrating their core banking systems. The company also said the platform does not require components to be removed if an institution decides not to proceed beyond the pilot stage.

Trading Engine Supports Direct Bank Transactions

Matera Workspace also includes a trading engine that enables customers to transact directly with their bank rather than relying on an external marketplace. The model is intended to keep transactions within the institution’s existing operating and regulatory framework, although individual banks will remain responsible for meeting applicable compliance requirements.

The platform also provides tools for financial institutions to customize their applications and develop new digital asset products. These include a declarative screen builder and workflows authored with artificial intelligence, allowing banks to configure interfaces and processes without building every component from scratch.

Such capabilities could help institutions test different offerings and respond to customer demand while limiting the development work associated with introducing new financial services.

By combining its ledger, custody integrations, payment QR technology and trading engine, Matera aims to simplify the technology stack banks need to introduce digital asset products.

Matera Targets Lower Barriers to Digital Asset Adoption

Carlos Netto, co-founder and chief executive of Matera North America, said banks had shown interest in digital assets but often lacked a practical starting point that did not involve replacing their core systems or preparing an extensive business case.

Netto indicated that reducing the need for migration and avoiding complex integration projects could change how financial institutions evaluate digital asset initiatives. Instead of focusing primarily on the cost and difficulty of implementation, banks could concentrate on deciding which products would best serve their customers.

This approach reflects a broader effort across financial technology to connect emerging blockchain-based services with established banking infrastructure. Institutions must still assess customer demand, cybersecurity, custody arrangements, operational risks, and regulatory obligations before introducing products.

The platform’s modular design could appeal to banks and credit unions seeking to experiment with stablecoins or other digital assets while retaining their existing systems. Fintech companies may also use the infrastructure to develop services that combine conventional financial accounts with blockchain-based assets.

Matera Workspace is now available to banks, credit unions and fintech companies. Its adoption will depend on how effectively institutions can integrate the platform into their operations and whether the technology delivers measurable improvements in cost, efficiency, and customer experience.

The launch positions Matera to serve financial institutions seeking a gradual path into digital assets, with a unified platform intended to reduce implementation complexity while preserving existing banking infrastructure.
