NYSE Plans Blockchain System for Tokenized Securities

New infrastructure targets instant settlement and 24/7 trading

The New York Stock Exchange is developing a blockchain-powered infrastructure designed to support the trading and settlement of tokenized securities, marking a significant step toward integrating distributed ledger technology into US equity markets.

Intercontinental Exchange, the parent company of NYSE, announced the initiative on January 19, 2026. The proposed platform is intended to combine the exchange’s existing Pillar matching engine with distributed ledger technology to manage activities after trades are executed.

The planned system is designed to enable round-the-clock trading, immediate settlement, fractional ownership, stablecoin payments and interoperability across multiple blockchain networks. The architecture would allow transactions to move beyond the traditional operating schedules of financial institutions while retaining the market infrastructure used by NYSE.

US equity markets currently operate under a T+1 settlement framework, meaning most securities transactions are finalized one business day after execution. NYSE’s proposed blockchain infrastructure is instead designed around atomic settlement, in which trade execution and the transfer of ownership take place at the same time.

Stablecoins could support 24-hour market access

Stablecoins are expected to play an important role in the proposed system because blockchain-based payment networks can operate continuously, unlike conventional banking infrastructure, which generally follows business-day and weekend schedules.

The integration could allow investors and other market participants to establish or adjust positions outside traditional banking hours. Orders would be entered in US dollars, while stablecoin-based payment rails could facilitate settlement on the digital infrastructure.

The platform is also expected to support fractional ownership, potentially allowing securities to be represented in smaller units. It would further be designed to connect with multiple blockchain protocols, creating opportunities for broader interoperability between traditional financial infrastructure and digital asset networks.

NYSE President Lynn Martin discussed the project during a financial sector seminar in Seoul on August 10. She indicated that financial markets were entering an important transition period as traditional finance increasingly interacted with decentralized finance technologies.

NYSE joins major DTCC tokenization trial

NYSE has also participated in a separate tokenization initiative conducted by the Depository Trust Company, a subsidiary of the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation. The trial took place in July and involved more than 30 financial organizations.

Participants included BlackRock, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, Nasdaq, Circle, Ondo Finance, Citadel Securities and Vanguard. According to DTCC, the participating organizations completed live production transactions that were finalized on July 15.

The trial involved converting securities held by DTC into tokenized representations that could be used in real-world financial transactions. Testing covered several areas, including equity transfers, US Treasury transactions, repurchase agreements, securities lending and borrowing, collateral management and central counterparty margin processes.

Transactions were processed through DTCC’s proprietary Besu-based network as well as the public Canton network. The initiative was conducted under a December 2025 SEC staff no-action letter that authorized DTC to pursue a three-year tokenization program.

DTCC plans to introduce its broader Tokenization Service in October after completing production testing.

NYSE already has regulatory framework for tokenized assets

NYSE’s blockchain plans are supported by regulatory groundwork established earlier in 2026. In April, the exchange submitted documentation to the US Securities and Exchange Commission seeking authorization for eligible tokenized securities to trade alongside conventional shares through its existing market infrastructure.

NYSE Developing Onchain Settlement Platform for Tokenized Securities

NYSE President Lynn Martin said the exchange is developing an onchain settlement platform for tokenized securities and participated in DTC’s tokenization pilot in July.

Under the framework, qualifying tokenized securities can use the same order books as their traditional counterparts when they maintain identical ticker symbols, CUSIP identifiers, shareholder rights and economic entitlements. The framework covers eligible companies within the Russell 1000 and major index-based exchange-traded funds.

However, the regulatory treatment of NYSE’s proposed instant-settlement infrastructure remains separate from the existing tokenization framework. Securities processed through the current DTC pilot continue to follow the T+1 settlement cycle.

The proposed NYSE blockchain system would therefore represent a broader shift by seeking to combine regulated exchange trading with atomic settlement and digital payment infrastructure, subject to regulatory approval. If approved, the initiative could provide institutional market participants with a pathway toward continuous securities trading while maintaining established exchange and investor protections.

The project highlights the growing convergence between traditional financial market infrastructure and blockchain technology, with tokenization moving from limited testing toward potential integration into mainstream securities markets.
