Open USD Launches With $1 Billion in Stablecoin Reserves

open standard

Open Standard has launched Open USD, a new U.S. dollar-backed stablecoin supported by more than $1 billion in committed short-term reserves and Chainlink as its official oracle partner.

The stablecoin is initially available across Base, Ethereum, Solana, and Tempo, with additional blockchain networks and financial integrations planned. The launch is aimed at expanding access to dollar-based digital payments and financial services while giving businesses infrastructure for moving funds between traditional currencies and blockchain networks.

Open USD can be converted between U.S. dollars and OUSD at a 1:1 rate, with businesses able to mint and redeem the stablecoin without fees through integrations and APIs.

Payment and Financial Infrastructure

Open Standard said businesses can access OUSD through integrations involving Stripe, Mastercard, Visa and Coinbase. BVNK, Stripe and the Visa Stablecoin Platform are among the services available at launch, while Coinbase support was scheduled to become available on Oct. 1.

Other early trading venues include Coinbase, Kraken and Uniswap, giving OUSD access to established cryptocurrency markets as the stablecoin begins building liquidity.

Bridge Building Inc., a Stripe subsidiary, is responsible for minting OUSD. Open Standard said BlackRock, Lead Bank and BNY are maintaining the reserves backing the stablecoin. Bridge is expected to provide monthly attestations covering those reserves, adding a regular reporting mechanism for users and market participants.

Stripe and Bridge provide payment and financial infrastructure that includes wallet services, payment capabilities, and mechanisms for moving between fiat currencies and digital assets. Mastercard has also partnered with BVNK, while Visa is making OUSD available through its Stablecoin Platform, which remains in beta and is accessible to selected users in certain locations.

Chainlink Provides Oracle Infrastructure

Chainlink has been designated as an official oracle partner for Open USD. Oracle networks provide blockchain applications with external information that can be used by smart contracts, including market and financial data.

The integration could allow OUSD to be incorporated into a broader range of decentralized financial products. Potential applications include lending, margin trading, automated market makers, and yield-generating services.

The Chainlink integration is intended to give OUSD access to reliable external data, allowing developers to connect the stablecoin with financial applications that require market information and automated smart-contract operations.

Aave Labs has already outlined a potential use case involving OUSD within decentralized finance. Its proposal includes support for OUSD on Aave V3 Ethereum and the Aave V4 Core Hub, where users could deposit and borrow the stablecoin but would initially be unable to use it as collateral.

The proposal indicates that higher loan-to-value limits and other collateral-related improvements could be considered after additional on-chain data becomes available. The oracle configuration has not yet been finalized, while other risk parameters are expected to be determined through community input and the availability of Chainlink feeds for the production network.

NEW: @openstandard has standardized on Chainlink as an official data oracle for Open USD.

Supported by 200+ financial giants like @Stripe, @Mastercard, and @Visa, OUSD brings zero-cost mint/burn mechanics and shared rewards to onchain finance.

Major Companies Back Open Standard

Open Standard was founded by Coinbase, Mastercard, Shopify, Stripe and Visa. The five companies are investors in the organization and are providing support for efforts to establish more than $1 billion in initial trading capital for OUSD.

Businesses have more ways to move value than ever before.

The challenge isn't creating more forms of money. It's helping businesses use them.

Open Standard said its broader partner network includes more than 200 financial institutions, fintech companies, banks, and multinational corporations. Securitize has also joined the OUSD network and plans to offer OUSD-related services through its tokenization platform.

The project has established a partner incentive structure based on OUSD supply and activity generated through participating platforms. That approach could encourage financial and technology companies to expand their use of the stablecoin.

Bridge has also received preliminary conditional approval from the U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency to establish Bridge National Trust Bank in New York. The proposed bank has not yet been established, and the preliminary approval remains subject to additional pre-opening requirements.

The launch places Open USD at the intersection of stablecoin payments, institutional financial infrastructure, and decentralized finance, with its long-term adoption likely to depend on liquidity, reserve transparency, regulatory progress, and the number of businesses and developers integrating the asset.
