Play Solana has officially introduced PlayVERSE, a decentralized application store designed specifically for its PSG1 handheld console. With the software now operational, the company is transitioning its focus from primarily selling hardware to cultivating a comprehensive gaming ecosystem built around the Solana blockchain.

The new platform integrates essential gaming functions directly into the console interface. Instead of requiring users to navigate between browser-based applications, wallets, and external services, PlayVERSE enables players to discover, install, launch, and update games within a single environment. This streamlined approach is expected to improve accessibility and user experience, particularly for those unfamiliar with Web3 gaming complexities.

The PSG1 device, which began shipping in October 2025, is now entering what the company describes as its next phase of content delivery. Company representatives indicated that the rollout of PlayVERSE signals the beginning of a more content-driven strategy centered on active gameplay rather than hardware distribution.

Tackling Fragmentation in Web3 Gaming

A major challenge in blockchain gaming has been ecosystem fragmentation. Users often face the inconvenience of switching between multiple chains, applications, and wallet confirmations to access or play games. Industry data from DappRadar in May 2025 highlighted this issue, noting that blockchain games accounted for only 4.9 million daily active wallets, representing less than 0.6 percent of the total 820 million active crypto wallets globally. At the infrastructure level, PlayVERSE is supported by Play Gate, a publishing framework that records game submissions on the Solana blockchain. This system logs key details such as submission hashes, timestamps, and developer identities. According to the company, this creates a transparent and verifiable record of the publishing process, offering both developers and users greater accountability compared to traditional centralized systems.

This blockchain-based audit trail is expected to enhance trust within the ecosystem while providing developers with a clear and decentralized pathway to distribute their games.

Hardware Built for Web3 Gaming

The PSG1 console is positioned as a Solana-native handheld gaming device. While its design draws inspiration from retro gaming systems, it operates on an Android-based platform and incorporates built-in blockchain functionality. A dedicated hardware wallet, SvalGuard, enables users to store digital assets such as SOL tokens, NFTs, and in-game rewards directly on the device without relying on third-party applications.

The console is equipped with modern hardware specifications, including an RK3588S2 processor, a 3.92-inch OLED display, 8GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage. Connectivity features include Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.4, while the operating system, EchOS, is tailored for Web3 gaming environments.

Security and Integrated Economy

Security remains a central focus for the device. A fingerprint sensor supports passwordless authentication and transaction approvals, while sensitive data such as private keys, is isolated using advanced hardware protections, including a Trusted Execution Environment and a secure element. Additional safeguards are provided through StrongBox, which ensures hardware-backed cryptographic security.

PlayVERSE also integrates with the broader Play Solana ecosystem through its native PLAY token. This token facilitates rewards, marketplace transactions, staking benefits, and future incentives tied to device ownership. Earnings generated within games are deposited directly into the device wallet, eliminating the need for external confirmations or third-party approvals.

Expanding the Solana Hardware Strategy

The launch of PlayVERSE and PSG1 aligns with Solana’s broader push into hardware-driven ecosystems.
