Quantum Alliance Sets Blockchain Security Standards for 2028

Blockchain companies have launched the Quantum Alliance, an open standards initiative designed to establish common criteria for measuring quantum resistance across cryptocurrency networks, wallets, and infrastructure. The initiative aims to help the industry prepare for future quantum computers that could undermine the cryptographic systems securing digital assets.

The alliance brings together executives, technology leaders, and researchers from blockchain, wallet security, privacy, and quantum computing organizations. Its work will focus on defining post-quantum readiness, establishing publicly verifiable testing standards and improving compatibility as networks transition to new cryptographic systems.

The Quantum Alliance plans to publish open standards, security benchmarks and migration guidelines that allow blockchain projects to evaluate their quantum readiness against a common set of criteria.

Quantum Computing Raises Concerns Over Crypto Security

Most major blockchain networks rely on elliptic-curve cryptography to authenticate transactions and protect digital assets. Public keys recorded on blockchains could become a security risk if sufficiently powerful quantum computers emerge, because Shor’s algorithm could potentially derive private keys from exposed public keys.

A compromised key could allow attackers to steal funds or gain control of privileged systems, including stablecoin issuance mechanisms, governance contracts, cross-chain bridges and oracle infrastructure. The article estimates that nearly the entire $2.9 trillion cryptocurrency market continues to rely on conventional digital signatures, with 6.04 million Bitcoin, representing 30.2% of the supply, considered exposed while held in vulnerable configurations.

Several recent assessments have raised concerns about the potential timeline for quantum attacks. The Quantum Doom Clock, a model developed by alliance contributors Richard T. Carback III and Colton Dillion, has identified March 2028 as a possible early window for a cryptographically relevant quantum computer.

Research from Google Quantum AI, the Ethereum Foundation, and Stanford researchers has also suggested that breaking elliptic-curve cryptography could require fewer than 500,000 physical qubits, substantially below earlier estimates. IonQ separately estimated that a fault-tolerant trapped-ion quantum computer with approximately 20,000 physical qubits could solve Bitcoin’s secp256k1 cryptographic problem in about 26 days per attempt. However, no existing quantum computer can currently perform such an attack.

Industry Lacks a Common Quantum-Readiness Standard

The U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology finalized its first post-quantum cryptography standards in August 2024. However, individual blockchain networks operate independently, leaving the industry without a universally accepted framework for assessing whether their infrastructure is prepared for quantum threats.

Existing evaluations have produced different conclusions about network readiness. A qLABS Quantum Vulnerability Index analysis ranked Ethereum second among prepared networks, citing its research and development roadmap. By contrast, the migration. fail assessment, which evaluates cryptographic protections already deployed, assigned Ethereum an F.

The differing assessments highlight the need for consistent criteria that distinguish future migration plans from security measures already operating in production.

Four Working Groups to Guide Blockchain Migration

The alliance will initially establish four working groups covering blockchain migration, post-quantum zero-knowledge systems, wallet security and cross-chain compatibility.

The migration group will examine how networks can transfer funds and keys to quantum-resistant cryptographic schemes, including dormant accounts and assets whose owners have lost access. It will also consider the challenges posed by already exposed public keys and the larger transaction sizes associated with post-quantum signatures.

The zero-knowledge group will evaluate cryptographic proof systems used by privacy networks, rollups, and cross-chain applications. Existing systems based on pairing-friendly elliptic curves may face quantum vulnerabilities, while alternatives such as zk-STARKs can avoid those assumptions but produce larger proofs.

The wallet security and interoperability initiatives will seek common specifications for post-quantum key generation, storage, transaction signing, and cross-chain operations, helping users and institutions manage assets more consistently across networks.

Founding Members Promote Open Industry Collaboration

The founding contributors include Quantus CEO Christopher Smith, American Fortress CEO Michal Pospieszalski, Intmax’s Leona Hioki, Keystone CTO Aaron Chen, Midnight Foundation CTO Sebastien Guillemot, Postquant Labs executives Colton Dillion and Richard T. Carback III, Abelian’s Richard Lee, The Vault’s Bryn Bennett and Hacken’s Katina Messinis.

Their organizations cover blockchain protocols, privacy infrastructure, hardware wallets, security auditing, digital asset custody, and quantum computing services.

The alliance intends to follow an open development model similar to the Internet Engineering Task Force. Individual contributors and organizations will be able to participate in working groups and submit proposals, with decisions guided by public evidence, broad agreement, and working implementations rather than corporate size or token ownership.

Quantum-Safe Demonstrations Highlight Remaining Challenges

Recent technical demonstrations indicate that migration is possible but remains incomplete. StarkWare’s quantum-safe Bitcoin transaction, mined on the mainnet in August, demonstrated a transaction using a specialized output. However, the approach does not protect all existing coins or resolve the risks associated with previously exposed public keys.

The alliance aims to establish standards that distinguish individual technical demonstrations from comprehensive network-level protection. Its findings and reference designs will be published openly, allowing developers, exchanges, custodians, and asset holders to assess progress using consistent benchmarks.

The initiative’s success will depend on participation across blockchain ecosystems and the adoption of practical migration measures before quantum computing capabilities advance enough to threaten existing cryptographic protections.
