South African sourcing and business development specialist Kwality Holdings has partnered with Waste2Wear, a global manufacturer of traceable recycled bags and textiles, to introduce blockchain-verified recycled products to the South African market.
The partnership is expected to bring a broad range of recycled goods to local businesses and consumers from mid-2026. The planned product range includes reusable shopping and retail bags, hospitality and medical uniforms, workwear, packaging, conference bags, backpacks, business accessories and laptop bags.
The partnership is designed to give buyers independently verifiable evidence of recycled content and environmental impact, allowing products to be traced back to their source and helping businesses address concerns over greenwashing.
Kwality Chief Executive Shahzaadee Ballim said the company did not view the partnership as an attempt to claim that South Africa lacked recycled-product suppliers. Instead, she indicated that Waste2Wear could add a combination of traceability, circular manufacturing and independently verified environmental reporting that is not currently available at comparable scale in the local market.
Waste2Wear Chief Executive George Tsogas said the partnership provided an opportunity to expand the company’s technology and product offering into South Africa, with Kwality’s local market expertise complementing Waste2Wear’s international capabilities.
Blockchain technology adds product-level transparency
A central feature of Waste2Wear’s offering is its ability to document the origin and processing of recycled materials. Each product is supported by a customer-accessible QR code and a digital traceability record. Buyers can use the system to access verified information covering material origin, processing, manufacturing and reported environmental impact.
Waste2Wear combines recycled-material manufacturing with blockchain-enabled tracking, independent verification and environmental impact assessments. The approach is intended to allow organizations to substantiate sustainability claims rather than relying solely on supplier declarations or marketing statements.
The system is particularly relevant as companies face increasing pressure to demonstrate that environmental commitments are supported by measurable results. Although businesses across industries have expanded sustainability programs over the past decade, questions about the accuracy and transparency of some environmental claims have contributed to concerns surrounding greenwashing.
Ballim said the quality of Waste2Wear’s products also challenged assumptions that recycled materials necessarily result in lower-quality goods. After examining the fabrics and finished products, she indicated that Kwality found their appearance, texture and overall quality exceeded its initial expectations.
The company said recycled materials supplied through Waste2Wear are already being used in products manufactured for major global brands, performance apparel companies and international sports organizations.
Search for proof led to partnership
Kwality’s relationship with Waste2Wear began with a customer request for sustainable shopping bags. During its subsequent market research, the company found that numerous products were marketed as recycled or sustainable, while independently verifying those claims could be difficult.
That search shifted Kwality’s focus from simply finding recycled products to identifying a system capable of providing evidence for sustainability claims. The company eventually identified Waste2Wear as a potential solution and developed the commercial partnership.
Waste2Wear’s traceability system uses QR codes, blockchain-enabled records and independent verification to connect individual products with information about recycled material content, manufacturing processes and environmental performance.
Depending on the product category and application, Waste2Wear solutions have demonstrated reductions of up to 88% in energy consumption, 71% in carbon emissions and 46% in water use compared with production using conventional virgin materials.
These figures are intended to provide measurable benchmarks for companies evaluating the environmental impact of their procurement decisions. The verification framework is supported by independent organizations, including German testing institute Wessling, which validates Waste2Wear’s patent-pending RA-3 recycled-content verification technology.
Independent methodologies are also used to assess environmental impacts across complex supply chains. This provides an additional layer of scrutiny for organizations seeking evidence that sustainability claims are supported by documented data.
Broader circular economy opportunities
The South African launch could create opportunities beyond the initial import and distribution of recycled products. Kwality indicated that the partnership could eventually support greater localization and contribute to the development of a broader circular economy ecosystem.
