S&P Dow Jones Indices (S&P DJI) has supported the completion of an over-the-counter derivatives transaction referencing a fully tokenized index, marking a development in the use of blockchain technology for traditional financial markets.
The transaction involved trading firms DRW and Marex and was executed on the Derivnex platform using the Canton Network. Kaiko tokenized the benchmark and provided official index valuations, enabling the transaction to use blockchain infrastructure while retaining established index governance and valuation processes.
The transaction is described as the first over-the-counter derivative swap referencing a fully tokenized S&P DJI index on blockchain infrastructure, demonstrating how traditional benchmark data and institutional derivatives trading can operate within a shared digital framework.
The deal involved a total return swap, a financial contract that allows one party to receive the returns generated by an asset or index without directly owning the underlying investment. The other party makes payments according to the contract’s terms, with the arrangement generally reflecting changes in the reference asset’s value and any applicable income.
Blockchain Combines Benchmark Data and Trade Management
Traditional derivatives transactions often rely on separate systems for market data, licensing, trade confirmation, valuation, and ongoing contract management. Integrating these processes through blockchain infrastructure could help financial institutions reduce operational fragmentation and coordinate transaction information more efficiently.
S&P DJI has been exploring blockchain applications since 2020, when it partnered with cryptocurrency software and data provider Lukka to develop cryptocurrency indexing capabilities. Its latest initiative extends that broader experience into institutional financial markets by applying blockchain technology to established benchmark and derivatives processes.
Through the arrangement, Kaiko supplies the tokenized benchmark and official index values used to support ongoing valuation. S&P DJI can extend its credit index business into blockchain-based financial applications while maintaining its existing governance and transparency standards.
Derivnex provides the trading infrastructure, while the Canton Network supports communication and coordination between participating financial institutions.
The shared framework is designed to connect benchmark data, licensing permissions, derivatives contract records, and ongoing valuation within a coordinated workflow, potentially reducing reliance on disconnected systems.
A common digital representation of a trade can also help counterparties manage transaction information throughout its lifecycle, from confirmation to subsequent processing and valuation.
Canton Network Targets Institutional Privacy Requirements
The Canton Network has attracted interest from financial institutions seeking blockchain infrastructure that accommodates confidentiality and regulatory requirements. Unlike many public blockchains, where transaction information can be broadly visible, Canton enables participants to control access to transaction data.
This approach is intended to allow financial institutions to coordinate transactions without exposing sensitive information to parties that do not need access to it. The network also supports communication between separate financial applications, helping institutions coordinate related asset transfers and payments.
Major financial companies, including Goldman Sachs, BNP Paribas, HSBC, Nasdaq, the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation, JPMorgan and Visa, have been associated with Canton-related institutional blockchain initiatives.

The network’s reported processing of more than $350 billion in daily U.S. Treasury repurchase agreement volume further illustrates its role in institutional financial operations. Repo transactions typically involve the sale of securities with an agreement to repurchase them later, making efficient collateral management important to participating firms.
Tokenized Finance Gains Momentum
The derivatives transaction comes as traditional financial market operators explore ways to represent securities and other financial instruments digitally. Tokenization could support faster asset transfers, improved coordination and more integrated settlement processes, although practical benefits depend on implementation, market adoption and regulatory requirements.
The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation has also advanced initiatives to enable eligible participants to represent securities held within its custody framework as blockchain-based tokens. Such projects reflect broader efforts to connect established financial infrastructure with distributed ledger technology.
The latest transaction also follows S&P Global‘s strategic investment in Kaiko, which expanded the data provider’s Series B funding round to $110 million.
While the transaction demonstrates a practical application of blockchain in derivatives markets, broader adoption will depend on interoperability, legal certainty, confidentiality controls, and integration with existing financial systems. The initiative nevertheless highlights how tokenized benchmarks could become part of institutional trading infrastructure without abandoning established valuation and governance practices.
