Taurus Connects Tokenization Platform to Swift Blockchain Ledger

Digital Asset Firm Prepares First Live Transactions

Digital asset infrastructure provider Taurus has completed integration of its tokenization and custody platforms with Swift’s blockchain-based shared ledger, paving the way for financial institutions to conduct cross-border payment transactions using bank-issued tokenized deposits.

The integration is expected to enable Taurus clients to connect their existing digital asset infrastructure to Swift’s ledger without having to develop separate systems for accessing the network. The first client connections are expected to become operational within days, while initial distributed ledger technology transactions are anticipated within weeks.

The integration gives financial institutions using Taurus a direct route to Swift’s tokenized deposit infrastructure while allowing them to build on their existing digital asset systems rather than developing new connectivity from scratch.

The Geneva-based company has connected Swift smart contracts to its Taurus-CAPITAL tokenization platform and Taurus-PROTECT custody platform. The integration is being deployed on permissioned blockchain infrastructure operated by participating clients.

Swift Expands Tokenized Deposit Payment Infrastructure

Swift announced in July that its shared ledger had reached a stage where initial live use could begin. At the time, 17 banks across six continents were preparing to test real-world transactions involving tokenized deposits.

Standard Chartered and HSBC have subsequently completed the first live cross-border transaction conducted through the ledger, linking their respective tokenized deposit systems.

Swift’s ledger functions as an orchestration layer for continuous cross-border payments involving tokenized deposits held on participating banks’ balance sheets. It coordinates transfers between financial institutions before the transactions reach final settlement through existing banking infrastructure.

The system is designed to support payments around the clock, including outside traditional banking hours. However, it does not replace established settlement mechanisms. Final settlement can continue through existing arrangements such as real-time gross settlement systems.

This structure allows banks to extend the availability of cross-border payment services while maintaining their existing settlement frameworks.

Taurus Targets Banks Entering Digital Assets

The integration is expected to be particularly relevant to financial institutions already using Taurus for digital asset issuance and custody. For those clients, connectivity with Swift’s ledger can reportedly be established within days, reducing the technical requirements for participating in tokenized deposit payments.

Taurus is also targeting Swift member banks that have not previously developed digital asset capabilities. By connecting its infrastructure to the shared ledger, the company aims to provide those institutions with an entry point into tokenized deposits without requiring them to independently develop the underlying technology.

The arrangement could become increasingly important as banks evaluate alternatives to privately issued stablecoins for cross-border payments. Swift’s approach is based on keeping tokenized deposits within the banking system rather than replacing commercial bank money with separate digital currencies.

Bank Deposits Remain on Institutional Balance Sheets

Under the model, bank-issued tokenized deposits remain associated with the participating financial institutions. Swift coordinates the movement of payment instructions between banks, including during nights and weekends, while final settlement continues through established financial mechanisms.

The integration is now production-ready, with the first live clients expected in a couple of days.

Swift’s ledger is designed to improve the speed and availability of cross-border payment coordination without requiring banks to abandon existing settlement infrastructure or move commercial deposits outside the banking system.

The architecture also preserves Swift’s existing role as a global financial messaging network. Instead of replacing conventional settlement arrangements, the blockchain-based ledger adds a coordination layer intended to facilitate tokenized deposit transfers between participating institutions.

Swift first unveiled the shared ledger at Sibos 2025. The project was developed with more than 40 financial institutions and progressed from an initial concept to activation in about nine months.

The 17 first-mover institutions participating in the initial phase are expected to help test how tokenized deposits can operate across banking networks and jurisdictions.

Taurus‘ integration adds another layer to that effort by connecting established digital asset custody and tokenization infrastructure to Swift’s emerging ledger. As the first client deployments move into production, the resulting transactions will provide a practical test of whether tokenized deposits can support broader institutional use in cross-border payments.

The expected launch of Taurus-enabled transactions within weeks could therefore provide an early indication of how quickly banks can adopt blockchain-based payment infrastructure while preserving existing banking relationships and settlement processes.
