A new Ethereum-compatible Layer-2 network tailored for gaming has officially gone live, potentially ushering in a new phase of growth for Web3 gaming. Developed on zkSync’s ZK-stack, ZKcandy has transitioned from a successful testnet phase to mainnet deployment, positioning itself at the intersection of blockchain gaming, mobile accessibility, and Telegram integration.
ZKcandy has emerged as a key player aiming to capture the surge in interest around mobile-first Web3 games. The platform’s testnet phase attracted considerable traction, reportedly resulting in the creation of over 2.4 million wallets. Building on this momentum, the company has now launched with eight initial games and is setting its sights on significant user growth, with the goal of surpassing two million active players within the next six months.
Backed by a $4 million seed round that included notable investors such as Animoca Ventures and WEMIX, ZKcandy is betting heavily on a model that combines simple user onboarding, immersive gameplay, and blockchain-based incentives. The company’s strategic choice to integrate directly with Telegram sets it apart from several other gaming L2 networks. This integration leverages the growing popularity of tap-to-earn games like Hamster Kombat and Catizen, which helped revive interest in crypto gaming during 2024. Although Hamster Kombat has since introduced its own Layer-2 network, it has yet to release additional games on it.
ZKcandy’s leadership has outlined a bold expansion plan involving the development of hundreds of games within a short time frame. Company CEO Kin Wai Lau, who also serves as the chairman of iCandy, the platform’s parent organization, highlighted the team’s focus on building games that are not only immersive but also easy to access. The objective is to enhance the gaming experience with blockchain functionality while eliminating the usual complexity associated with Web3 technology. He also emphasized that ZKcandy is shaping an ecosystem that actively encourages and supports game developers.
Another area of innovation being explored by the platform is the integration of artificial intelligence into Web3 gaming. ZKcandy intends to utilize AI to make non-playable characters (NPCs) more responsive and interactive, enabling them to adapt to players’ actions and choices. This approach is expected to deliver personalized storylines and dynamic gameplay experiences. The development team believes this AI-driven methodology could significantly lower game development costs while allowing for faster prototyping and iteration.
While specific details remain sparse, ZKcandy is expected to roll out additional games that may incorporate incentive-based mechanics potentially linked to its native $CANDY token. These features are designed to deepen user engagement while offering new revenue models for developers and players alike.
Beyond the immediate launch of its mainnet and initial set of games, iCandy appears to have ambitious plans in the high-end gaming segment. The company is reportedly working on a AAA game that draws from a well-known Hollywood intellectual property. Although official announcements are yet to be made, industry watchers have noted iCandy’s previous collaborations with prominent studios such as Naughty Dog and Square Enix, suggesting a possible push into mainstream gaming culture.
