THORChain has moved into the setup phase for native Zcash integration, with network nodes now able to begin scanning the Zcash blockchain through independently operated Zcash full nodes. The development brings THORChain closer to supporting Zcash directly within its cross-chain liquidity infrastructure.
Under the process, each participating THORChain node runs its own Zcash full node and uses it to independently monitor the Zcash network. This approach is intended to allow validators to verify blockchain activity without relying on a centralized data source before native ZEC support is activated.
THORChain nodes can now begin independently scanning the Zcash blockchain, establishing the infrastructure required for native ZEC support and cross-chain swaps once scanner health is confirmed.
The scanning stage is an important part of the integration because THORChain validators need to establish that the Zcash data being monitored is functioning reliably across the network. The scanners effectively provide the connection between THORChain’s validator infrastructure and Zcash’s blockchain state.
Once the scanners meet the required health conditions, ZEC can be enabled during the next THORChain churn. Churning is part of the network’s validator management process and provides the scheduled point at which supported assets and network configurations can become active.
ZEC could gain access to THORChain liquidity
The activation would give ZEC access to THORChain’s multi-chain swap infrastructure, creating another potential venue for cross-chain liquidity involving the privacy-focused cryptocurrency.
Rather than requiring users to rely on a separate intermediary for every transaction between supported networks, native integration is designed to allow assets to interact directly with THORChain’s cross-chain liquidity system. The addition of ZEC would therefore expand the number of blockchain ecosystems that can participate in THORChain-based swaps.
For Zcash users, the integration could provide another route for moving liquidity across supported blockchain networks. For THORChain, adding Zcash would expand the range of assets available through its decentralized liquidity infrastructure.
If ZEC is activated after successful scanner validation, Zcash would gain direct access to THORChain’s multi-chain swap infrastructure, while THORChain would add another blockchain to its native liquidity network.

The integration could also have implications for RUNE, THORChain’s native asset. THORChain’s liquidity and swap infrastructure generates fees through transactions conducted across the network. Once Zcash support becomes active, ZEC-related activity could therefore contribute an additional source of fee-generating transactions for the broader THORChain ecosystem.
Activation depends on network readiness
The timing of ZEC activation is not tied to a specific calendar date. Instead, the process depends on the health of the Zcash scanners and the timing of the next eligible churn.
This means the transition from testing infrastructure to live support could occur once the technical requirements have been satisfied rather than on a predetermined launch date. Market participants monitoring ZEC and THORChain may therefore pay attention to scanner status and the network’s churn schedule as indicators of when activation could occur.
The staged approach also reduces the need to activate the integration before THORChain validators have established that the required infrastructure is operating correctly. Independent full-node operation allows participating nodes to maintain their own view of Zcash blockchain activity, which can strengthen the verification process before the asset becomes available for cross-chain transactions.
The move represents a technical step toward expanding THORChain’s native asset coverage, with scanner validation and the subsequent churn serving as the remaining operational conditions before ZEC can go live.
The development adds to THORChain’s broader effort to connect multiple blockchain networks through a common liquidity layer. If the Zcash integration reaches activation, users could gain another path for cross-chain swaps, while THORChain could benefit from additional transaction activity and liquidity.
Until scanner health is confirmed and the relevant churn takes place, however, native ZEC support remains in the setup phase. The final activation will depend on successful technical validation and THORChain’s network scheduling process.
