Physical passport stamps are gradually becoming less common as international travel becomes increasingly digital, prompting American Express to explore new ways for customers to preserve memories of trips abroad.
A survey commissioned by American Express found that 73% of adults wanted additional ways to digitally commemorate their international travels. The finding helped inspire an idea within the company to transform eligible card transactions made during trips into virtual collectible stamps that customers could access through the American Express mobile app.
The concept eventually developed into Amex Passport, a digital travel experience built with blockchain technology. The program uses blockchain to create and track collectible travel stamps based on customers’ card activity. The collection has grown into one of the largest nonfungible token collections on Base, a blockchain network.
Following feedback from customers, American Express has expanded the program to allow cardholders to generate digital stamps for qualifying trips dating back to 2019. The expansion gives customers a way to build a broader digital record of their international travel history rather than limiting the collection to more recent journeys.
Digital Labs Turns Ideas Into Customer Products
Amex Passport was initially introduced through an in-app environment where customers could test experimental features. Its development reflects a broader innovation strategy at American Express, which has been exploring emerging technologies including blockchain and artificial intelligence.
The company’s Digital Labs, a specialized innovation unit of about 120 employees, works with teams across the organization to turn promising concepts into customer-facing pilots. Ideas can originate through internal initiatives and are then evaluated, developed, and tested before potentially moving into wider deployment.
American Express received more than 110 ideas through its annual Innovation Challenge in 2025. The strongest concepts were subsequently taken through a structured development process involving Digital Labs and other teams.

Lumi is being used to improve fraud detection and enhance customer support capabilities, while also providing infrastructure for additional artificial intelligence experimentation. The platform forms part of a wider effort to use data and emerging technologies across the company.

The strategy comes as competition remains intense across the credit card industry, where companies are seeking new ways to differentiate customer experiences while improving digital services.
