Amex Passport Turns Card Transactions Into Collectible Travel Memories

Physical passport stamps are gradually becoming less common as international travel becomes increasingly digital, prompting American Express to explore new ways for customers to preserve memories of trips abroad.

A survey commissioned by American Express found that 73% of adults wanted additional ways to digitally commemorate their international travels. The finding helped inspire an idea within the company to transform eligible card transactions made during trips into virtual collectible stamps that customers could access through the American Express mobile app.

The concept eventually developed into Amex Passport, a digital travel experience built with blockchain technology. The program uses blockchain to create and track collectible travel stamps based on customers’ card activity. The collection has grown into one of the largest nonfungible token collections on Base, a blockchain network.

Following feedback from customers, American Express has expanded the program to allow cardholders to generate digital stamps for qualifying trips dating back to 2019. The expansion gives customers a way to build a broader digital record of their international travel history rather than limiting the collection to more recent journeys.

Digital Labs Turns Ideas Into Customer Products

Amex Passport was initially introduced through an in-app environment where customers could test experimental features. Its development reflects a broader innovation strategy at American Express, which has been exploring emerging technologies including blockchain and artificial intelligence.

The company’s Digital Labs, a specialized innovation unit of about 120 employees, works with teams across the organization to turn promising concepts into customer-facing pilots. Ideas can originate through internal initiatives and are then evaluated, developed, and tested before potentially moving into wider deployment.

American Express received more than 110 ideas through its annual Innovation Challenge in 2025. The strongest concepts were subsequently taken through a structured development process involving Digital Labs and other teams.

Amex Passport demonstrates how American Express is using blockchain to transform ordinary card transactions into digital travel collectibles, giving customers a new way to preserve and revisit their international travel experiences.

The company’s approach places emphasis on testing products in real-world settings rather than developing technology solely as a theoretical exercise. Executive Vice President and Global Head of Innovation Luke Gebb has described the company’s innovation process as being centered on taking ideas to market and learning from the results.

Cloud Data Platform Supports AI and Fraud Detection

American Express has also been investing in technology infrastructure that supports applications beyond customer-facing products. One example is Lumi, a centralized, cloud-based data platform that has been developed to support several areas of the company’s operations.

Lumi is being used to improve fraud detection and enhance customer support capabilities, while also providing infrastructure for additional artificial intelligence experimentation. The platform forms part of a wider effort to use data and emerging technologies across the company.

American Express has explored hundreds of potential artificial intelligence applications, reflecting the increasing role of automation and data-driven systems in financial services.

The company’s innovation program combines customer-facing experiments such as Amex Passport with large-scale technology initiatives designed to strengthen fraud prevention, customer service, and artificial intelligence development.

Innovation Efforts Expand Amid Credit Card Competition

American Express has established several internal programs to encourage employees to develop and test new ideas. These include innovation awards and a global hackathon that attracted more than 400 teams.

The company also launched Amex U in March 2026, a training platform intended to support employee development and technology-focused learning. These programs are designed to broaden participation in innovation beyond specialized technology teams.

The strategy comes as competition remains intense across the credit card industry, where companies are seeking new ways to differentiate customer experiences while improving digital services.

For American Express, Amex Passport illustrates how emerging technologies can be applied to relatively familiar financial products. Rather than using blockchain solely for financial transactions, the company has incorporated it into a customer engagement experience centered on travel.

The expansion to trips dating back to 2019 also indicates that customer feedback is influencing how the initiative evolves. By combining transaction data, blockchain-based collectibles, and mobile technology, American Express is seeking to create a digital travel record that extends the role of its payment cards beyond purchases and into the preservation of travel memories.
