ISO Approves China-Led Global Blockchain Service Standard

International Project Targets Interoperability, Security, and Enterprise Adoption

The International Organization for Standardization has approved a China-led project to develop a global technical standard for Blockchain as a Service, marking an early step toward greater consistency in the rapidly expanding blockchain services sector.

The initiative is expected to establish technical requirements covering blockchain infrastructure, network development and operations, service management, smart contracts, data interoperability, and cybersecurity. Germany, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Japan, Portugal, and Uganda have confirmed their participation in the international standard-setting process.

The proposed standard aims to create a unified technical framework for Blockchain as a Service platforms, with a focus on improving interoperability, security, operational reliability, and cross-platform compatibility.

Blockchain as a Service is a cloud-based model that enables businesses and other organizations to use blockchain technology without building, operating, or maintaining their own blockchain infrastructure. The approach is broadly comparable to Software as a Service, under which service providers manage much of the underlying technical complexity while customers access applications and computing resources as needed.

Common Requirements for Blockchain Platforms

The new project is expected to address several technical areas considered important for broader adoption of blockchain services.

Infrastructure and network requirements are expected to establish baseline standards for system architecture, network deployment, operational stability, and service reliability. These guidelines could provide clearer expectations for providers developing and operating BaaS platforms.

The project will also examine service management and smart contract operations. Common requirements in these areas could help define how blockchain services are administered and how automated agreements are deployed and executed across different platforms.

Data interoperability and security will form another major part of the proposed framework. The standard is expected to consider methods for enabling secure data exchange between blockchain systems while supporting stronger protections for information and digital assets.

By establishing shared technical benchmarks, the project could reduce fragmentation in the BaaS market and provide enterprises with clearer criteria for selecting, integrating, and evaluating blockchain services.

The development of common standards could be particularly relevant to organizations that use multiple blockchain platforms or work with partners across national borders. Differences in technical design and operating requirements have created integration challenges in parts of the blockchain industry, potentially increasing costs and limiting collaboration.

Potential Impact on Global Blockchain Adoption

The initiative comes as blockchain technology is being applied beyond cryptocurrency markets. Businesses and public-sector organizations are exploring blockchain systems for supply chain monitoring, digital identity, financial services, record management, and government-related applications.

However, the absence of widely accepted technical standards has remained a challenge for organizations seeking to connect different blockchain services. A global ISO framework could provide vendors, enterprises, and governments with a common reference point when developing or deploying BaaS systems.

The standard could also improve confidence among organizations considering blockchain adoption. Once completed, it may serve as a benchmark for assessing service quality, security practices, technical compatibility, and operational performance.

The participation of countries including Germany, the United Kingdom, and Japan indicates broad international interest in developing common technical foundations for blockchain services.

The project remains in its initial phase, and no completion schedule has been announced. ISO standards generally require several stages of technical drafting, expert review, consultation, and voting before a final document is published. The process can take several years, depending on the complexity of the subject and the level of agreement among participating members.

Industry participants are likely to closely monitor how the project addresses data sovereignty and cross-border information flows, which remain sensitive policy issues in many jurisdictions. The final framework will need to balance detailed technical requirements with practical implementation if it is to gain broad acceptance.

The approval of the China-led project represents an important move toward international harmonization in blockchain services. Although the standard has not yet been finalized, its broad scope and multinational participation could position it as a significant reference framework for enterprises and governments seeking to deploy blockchain technology with greater confidence.
