LayerZero Unveils Zero Blockchain Targeting 5M TPS

New Layer-1 architecture separates execution from verification

LayerZero Labs, the team behind the cross-chain messaging protocol LayerZero, is moving beyond its existing infrastructure with Zero, a new heterogeneous Layer-1 blockchain architecture designed to support significantly higher transaction throughput and specialized blockchain environments.

The company unveiled the architecture on Feb. 10, 2026, presenting a system built around zero-knowledge proofs that separates transaction execution from verification. The design divides network responsibilities between lightweight Block Validators, which verify transactions, and optional high-performance Block Producers, which process transactions.

Zero is designed to keep transaction verification decentralized while allowing execution capacity to scale horizontally through parallel Atomicity Zones, a structure intended to support substantially higher throughput than conventional single-chain architectures.

The approach is intended to address one of the central challenges facing blockchain networks: increasing transaction capacity without compromising the accessibility and decentralization of verification. Rather than requiring every network participant to execute every transaction, Zero uses zero-knowledge proofs to allow validators to confirm that transactions were processed correctly.

Atomicity Zones aim to scale blockchain execution

A key component of the architecture is the Atomicity Zone, which functions as a specialized execution environment. Instead of forcing different applications and use cases to compete for the same block space, Zero is designed to provide separate execution lanes for specific workloads.

LayerZero has claimed that an individual Atomicity Zone could process as many as 2 million transactions per second. The architecture is intended to scale horizontally, potentially increasing aggregate capacity to as much as 5 million transactions per second as additional execution environments are deployed.

The company also expects transaction costs to be approximately $0.0001. Such performance and cost targets would place Zero among the most ambitious blockchain architectures if they are achieved under real-world operating conditions.

The system relies on zero-knowledge proofs to reduce the computational burden placed on validators. Instead of independently repeating execution, validators can verify cryptographic evidence that demonstrates the validity of completed transactions.

Custom infrastructure supports Zero architecture

LayerZero has developed additional infrastructure to support the new blockchain design. QMDB is intended to manage state storage, while FAFO is designed to support parallel computation across the network.

The development effort has taken approximately 2.5 years, reflecting the scale of the architectural shift from a cross-chain messaging protocol toward a full Layer-1 blockchain.

The architecture could allow Zero to separate the security and verification functions of the network from its computational workload, potentially enabling enterprise-scale applications to expand without requiring every validator to handle the same execution burden.

LayerZero has also secured backing and strategic relationships with major financial and technology organizations. Partners cited in the announcement include Citadel Securities, ARK Invest, Google Cloud, the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation, and Intercontinental Exchange, the parent company of the New York Stock Exchange.

The involvement of financial market infrastructure providers indicates that Zero is being positioned for applications extending beyond decentralized finance and cryptocurrency trading.

ATLAS connects Zero to financial markets

LayerZero has further expanded its financial infrastructure strategy with ATLAS, a headless exchange backend designed to process transactions involving multiple asset classes. The system was unveiled on Aug. 25, 2026, and operates on the Zero framework.

"LayerZero has built the messaging infrastructure that connects 170+ blockchains, facilitated more than $270 billion in cumulative cross-chain value transfers, and achieved the institutional traction associated with running production infrastructure at scale. ATLAS is intended to provide backend infrastructure for financial transactions while leveraging the scalability and execution model developed for Zero. The platform could potentially support applications requiring high transaction volumes and access to different types of financial assets.

The ecosystem also incorporates a fee mechanism connected to the ZRO token. Under the proposed structure, 75% of certain fees generated through ATLAS are allocated to a ZRO buy-and-burn mechanism, potentially reducing the circulating supply of the token as network activity generates eligible fees.

Mainnet planned for fall 2026

Zero is targeting a mainnet launch in fall 2026. The ZRO token is expected to play a role in securing the network and participating in the economic model associated with the Zero and ATLAS infrastructure.

If Zero delivers on its stated performance targets, the network could represent a significant shift toward highly parallel blockchain execution while maintaining a separate and broadly accessible verification layer.

The upcoming mainnet will provide the first major test of whether the architecture can translate its theoretical scalability and low-cost targets into sustained performance under real-world conditions. Its progress will also determine whether Zero can attract the applications, developers, and institutional users needed to support a new Layer-1 ecosystem.
