In a move that may reshape the future of financial services, Ethereum Layer-2 network Mantle has introduced what it described as the first fully on-chain crypto neobank. Unveiled on Wednesday, the new platform—named UR—operates entirely on blockchain infrastructure, positioning itself as a bridge between decentralized finance (DeFi) and traditional financial systems (TradeFi).
Introducing UR: A Unified Crypto and Fiat Banking Experience
The concept of a crypto neobank integrates services typically offered by digital-only banks with on-chain and off-chain rails supported by crypto and DeFi ecosystems. Through this model, users can manage fiat and crypto assets within a single account. UR, pronounced “You Are,” is Mantle’s take on this fusion, designed to offer a seamless experience across both financial domains.
Unlike many existing banking apps and crypto-friendly platforms that only incorporate digital assets as secondary features, UR is built natively on blockchain. This structural distinction sets it apart, enabling deeper integration and transparency for users.
UR allows account holders to open Swiss IBAN accounts, providing access to savings and spending in both fiat and cryptocurrencies. Supported fiat currencies currently include the Euro (EUR), Swiss Franc (CHF), US Dollar (USD), and Chinese Renminbi (RMB). These holdings are backed 1:1 by tokenized deposits under a Swiss banking license, reinforcing the platform’s emphasis on stability and regulatory alignment.
For transactions, the platform presently supports fund transfers through SWIFT, SEPA, and Ethereum networks. However, Mantle plans to transition these operations to Base and its native Mantle Network over time.
Towards a Fully Blockchain-Based Banking Chain
Mantle’s broader vision for UR involves expanding its utility far beyond basic banking functions. By 2025, the platform is expected to incorporate services such as foreign exchange, fiat-to-crypto on-ramps, and tools for lending and earning yields. Every aspect of these services—including account activity, card transactions, and lending strategies—is set to operate directly on the Mantle Layer-2 blockchain.
This roadmap indicates a shift toward what the team refers to as a “banking chain”—a blockchain architecture built specifically to accommodate banking operations at the protocol level. Rather than adding financial applications as layers on top of an existing chain, Mantle aims to embed core banking functionalities within the chain itself. At present, access to UR is limited to early contributors, with public access scheduled for launch in Q3 2025.

Market Potential and Industry Trends
The timing of Mantle’s UR launch coincides with rapid growth in the broader neobank sector. Most current neobanks offer limited crypto features as add-ons, with platforms like Revolut and N26 integrating basic trading functions but lacking on-chain infrastructure. Revolut, for instance, added 15 million new users in 2024 alone, pushing its total customer base to over 52 million. Out of these, around 9 million users actively engage with crypto services.
Data indicates that approximately 10% of neobank users globally are already involved in cryptocurrency-related activity. With the neobank industry currently valued at around $100 billion and experiencing a user growth rate of 50% annually, the potential for fully on-chain neobanks like UR is significant.
If platforms such as UR can tap into even a small share of the next wave of neobank users, they could emerge as serious contenders in both traditional and decentralized financial markets. Mantle’s strategy appears focused on capitalizing on this opportunity by embedding blockchain-native design at the heart of next-generation financial services.
