MVB, Velocity Join Visa Stablecoin Settlement Pilot

MVB Financial Corp., a banking partner for fintech and technology companies, is participating with stablecoin payments platform Velocity in a Visa Direct pilot aimed at enabling stablecoin-based funding and settlement for eligible push-to-card payouts.

The initiative is designed to bring stablecoin liquidity into MVB’s existing banking and payments operations, giving the bank and eligible customers additional options for managing funds associated with Visa Direct transactions. Availability will depend on eligibility and geography.

Stablecoins Move Into Existing Payment Infrastructure

Under the arrangement, MVB will be able to use stablecoins to settle certain Visa Direct payouts. The infrastructure is intended to provide greater flexibility in how liquidity is positioned and settled across the bank’s operations and participating customers.

Eligible MVB participants will be able to use stablecoins for specified funding and settlement obligations through Visa Direct. Licensed partners will handle functions including digital-asset conversion, wallet connectivity, and on-chain controls, allowing MVB and its customers to access the capabilities without having to build separate blockchain infrastructure.

The partnership integrates stablecoin liquidity into established banking and payment workflows, allowing eligible MVB customers to access on-chain funding and settlement through a single API and regulated wallet infrastructure.

The structure reflects a growing effort by financial institutions to incorporate stablecoins beneath existing payment systems rather than offering them solely as standalone digital-asset products. Such an approach could allow banks and fintech companies to use blockchain-based settlement while retaining existing customer relationships, operational controls and payment processes.

MVB Chief Executive Officer Larry F. Mazza said the banking industry was undergoing rapid technological change and that stablecoins were becoming an important component of that transformation. He said using stablecoins for payout-related capital movement could provide clients with faster and more flexible ways to manage funds.

Visa Direct Provides Established Payment Rail

The pilot also aligns with broader efforts by major card networks to support stablecoin settlement for selected financial obligations. These include settlement related to Original Credit Transactions, issuer responsibilities, and other traditional payment flows.

For fintech companies and payments businesses, stablecoin-enabled settlement could provide additional flexibility in moving capital through the banking system. Velocity’s infrastructure allows funds to be moved on-chain, maintained as stablecoins and subsequently deployed into payment flows without requiring businesses to adopt an entirely separate operational framework.

Velocity founder and Chief Executive Officer Eric Queathem said the company viewed stablecoins as most useful when they operated behind the scenes within financial infrastructure that businesses already use. He said MVB’s focus on fintech and payments companies made the bank a suitable environment for introducing these capabilities, while Visa Direct offered an established payment network through which stablecoin liquidity could be connected to existing financial rails.

Yesterday, @velocityxyz_ announced a new milestone in U.S. payments: through Velocity’s infrastructure, @mvbbanking will become the first U.S. Sponsor Bank to settle eligible @Visa Direct push-to-card flows onchain using stablecoins.

The model could reduce the operational changes required from customers while giving institutions access to blockchain-based liquidity management. It also places stablecoin functionality closer to traditional banking processes, potentially making adoption easier for companies that do not want to manage multiple digital-asset systems.

Broader Treasury and Settlement Applications

The partnership could eventually support additional applications involving treasury management, settlement, and payments. As stablecoins become more closely connected with established financial networks, banks could use them as part of routine liquidity and payment operations rather than limiting their role to specialized digital-asset services.

MVB and Velocity are positioning the pilot as a foundation for broader stablecoin infrastructure that could give financial institutions and fintech customers more flexible ways to fund, settle, and move money while remaining connected to established payment networks.

The development underscores the continuing convergence between traditional financial infrastructure and blockchain-based settlement technology. For banks and payments companies, the focus is increasingly shifting toward integrating stablecoins into existing systems while maintaining regulatory, operational and customer controls.

If the pilot expands to additional use cases, stablecoin settlement could become more deeply embedded in MVB’s banking relationships and payment workflows. That would give eligible businesses another mechanism for managing liquidity while preserving access to established financial networks and services.
