Solana Payment Channels Target 1M Payments Per Second

New system focuses on AI agents and high-frequency API payments

Solana has introduced a new payment channel technology designed to handle more than 1 million payments per second, targeting emerging use cases such as artificial intelligence agents, application programming interface services, and machine-to-machine transactions.

The technology was developed in partnership with Alibaba Cloud and is intended to reduce bottlenecks associated with large volumes of small blockchain payments. Solana estimates that individual payments could cost about $0.000000000776, potentially making the system suitable for transactions where conventional blockchain fees would be prohibitively expensive.

Solana’s payment channels are designed to move frequent transactions off-chain while retaining on-chain settlement, allowing users to authorize spending limits in advance and significantly reducing the number of transactions that must be processed directly on the blockchain.

Payment channels operate by establishing an on-chain spending allowance before transactions take place. Once the channel is active, individual payments can be authorized through signed messages without requiring every transaction to be recorded on-chain immediately. The final balance can then be settled on-chain, reducing network activity and potentially lowering costs.

The model is particularly relevant to AI services, where automated agents could generate hundreds or thousands of small payments while performing tasks. Similar requirements can emerge from API-based services that charge customers based on individual requests or usage.

Alibaba Cloud integrates payment channels

Alibaba Cloud is among the first partners to integrate the new technology. Its API endpoints have been enabled to support payment channels, allowing developers to use the model when paying for cloud services.

The integration could reduce the need for developers to approve individual API calls or establish separate payment arrangements for each service interaction. Instead, funds can be authorized through a payment channel and used as services are consumed.

Solana’s implementation is also designed to preserve non-custodial control. Users retain control of their assets throughout the payment process rather than transferring custody to an intermediary.

The company tested the system by simulating 100,000 wallets conducting transactions simultaneously. According to the report, the test exceeded 1 million payments per second, a throughput that would theoretically allow as many as 80 billion payments to be processed over 24 hours at the same rate.

Infrastructure targets AI-driven economies

The new payment system comes as Solana expands its infrastructure for digital payments and automated transactions. MoneyGram launched services on Solana in August, providing cash deposit and withdrawal capabilities across more than 170 countries, according to the report.

Solana’s x402 protocol has also become part of its broader strategy for machine-driven payments. The protocol reportedly has processed 200 million transactions representing $50 billion in volume, highlighting growing interest in payment infrastructure designed for automated digital commerce.

The combination of high throughput, extremely low projected transaction costs, and non-custodial design could make Solana’s payment channels particularly useful for AI agents and other applications that generate large numbers of low-value transactions.

The technology also provides an alternative approach to scaling blockchain payments. Bitcoin’s Lightning Network and Ethereum-based state channel systems use related concepts to reduce the amount of activity that must occur directly on a blockchain.

Solana’s approach is being positioned around applications requiring very high transaction frequency. AI agents, cloud services, and automated software could potentially make payments continuously without requiring a blockchain transaction for every individual interaction.

SOL rises as payment infrastructure expands

As of Sept. 4, 2026, SOL was trading at $105.28, up 5.64% over the previous 24 hours, according to the supplied report. The broader digital asset market has faced questions about the pace of progress in blockchain scaling, but Solana’s latest payment infrastructure could renew developer interest in high-frequency applications.

For businesses, the ability to process large numbers of automated payments at extremely low costs could support new commercial models based on usage rather than traditional subscriptions or manual billing.

Developers can also access open-source payment channel tools through GitHub, while Alibaba Cloud’s live integration provides an early example of the technology being used with commercial cloud infrastructure.

If the reported performance can be sustained under real-world conditions, Solana’s payment channels could provide infrastructure for an emerging economy in which AI agents, APIs, and software systems conduct transactions autonomously at a scale that conventional payment systems and on-chain settlement may struggle to accommodate.
