Square Enix’s blockchain-based narrative game, Symbiogenesis, which was previously expected to be discontinued by July 2025, is now set for a fresh lease of life through an expansion to Sony’s emerging blockchain network, Soneium. This development marks a strategic shift, positioning the title as a foundational element in Sony’s broader Web3 gaming initiative.
According to Sony, the inclusion of Symbiogenesis on Soneium represents more than just a platform extension—it introduces the first Web3 game from a major publisher to their proprietary blockchain. The company indicated that major entertainment studios and game developers are increasingly turning to Soneium as a platform that supports creative ownership, interoperability, and cross-game collaboration. With intellectual property (IP)-driven titles forming the backbone of this growing ecosystem, Soneium is being framed as a collaborative hub for next-generation gaming experiences.
Despite its expansive lore and ambitious structure, Symbiogenesis has reportedly struggled to capture mainstream popularity. The game features over 10,000 unique character NFTs, six narrative chapters, and a total of 1.1 million words of branching interactive storytelling. Each NFT is designed to unlock distinct content and player decisions, influencing how the game’s story evolves. However, only a limited number of users have actively engaged with these features thus far.
Sony appears intent on revitalizing the title by integrating it with two other games within the Soneium ecosystem—Evermoon and Sleepagotchi. Players who complete a designated quest within Symbiogenesis will earn a commemorative NFT, which unlocks exclusive benefits in the other two games. These benefits include access to crossover content, profile customizations, and digital collectibles such as limited-edition stickers and high-rarity in-game items.
This move highlights Sony’s broader goal of fostering a shared digital universe across its Web3 properties. Evermoon, a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game, is built on Soneium and offers 5v5 combat, interoperable NFTs, and integrated DeFi rewards. It is being positioned as the fast-paced, competitive pillar of the ecosystem. In contrast, Sleepagotchi introduces lightweight engagement loops via a mobile-first experience, rewarding daily check-ins and casual play. Initially launched on Telegram, Sleepagotchi LITE has now expanded to LINE and features over one million users.
The interoperability between the three games is intended to create a dynamic user journey where achievements in one title unlock experiences in another. The current crossover campaign begins with the completion of chapters one to four in Symbiogenesis, which serves as the gateway to unlocking perks in both Evermoon and Sleepagotchi.
Sony characterized Symbiogenesis as its flagship Web3 entertainment experience, merging NFT ownership, story-driven progression, and user-driven outcomes. This initiative also reflects a broader trend of Web3 developers prioritizing interconnected content that spans across titles, apps, and communities.
As a major industry player, Square Enix’s decision to extend its game’s lifecycle through Soneium is seen as an endorsement of Sony’s efforts to redefine interactive entertainment. With Symbiogenesis delivering the story, Evermoon offering competitive action, and Sleepagotchi promoting habitual engagement, Sony aims to turn its blockchain network into a seamless and creator-driven ecosystem for the next phase of gaming.
