S&P Global Launches DeFi Vault Risk Assessment Framework

New system targets rapidly expanding blockchain lending market

S&P Global Ratings has launched Vault Risk Assessment, a new framework designed to provide forward-looking analysis of risks that could impair investors’ positions in blockchain-based lending vaults.

The initiative comes as deposits in digital asset vaults have grown sharply. Market deposits reached about $10 billion in September 2026, compared with approximately $1.5 billion in September 2024. The two reported figures represent growth of about 6.7 times over the two-year period.

S&P Global’s Vault Risk Assessment evaluates six categories of risk that can affect an investor’s position in a blockchain lending vault, bringing a structured institutional risk-analysis approach to a rapidly expanding DeFi market.

The framework is specifically designed to assess relative impairment risk. It does not evaluate whether a vault offers an attractive yield, nor does it represent a conventional credit rating of an issuer.

Six factors shape the assessment

Digital asset vaults pool deposits from investors and deploy the capital on blockchain networks according to predetermined strategies. S&P Global compares their structure in some respects with managed fixed-income funds, although their underlying technology and operating models can differ substantially.

Vault strategies can be automated through smart contracts, managed by human curators or operate through a combination of automated systems and human oversight. Investors generally receive share tokens that represent their proportional claim on the vault’s assets and accumulated returns.

The new VRA framework examines six areas: portfolio credit quality, liquidity mismatch, curator risk, blockchain risk, protocol risk, and vault security and governance risk.

Portfolio credit quality considers the assets and lending exposures underlying a vault. Liquidity mismatch addresses potential differences between the liquidity of the vault’s assets and the ability of investors to access their funds.

Curator risk focuses on the individuals or organizations responsible for managing or directing a strategy. Blockchain and protocol risks address vulnerabilities or operational issues associated with the networks and decentralized applications supporting the vault.

Security and governance risk covers issues surrounding the vault’s technical safeguards and the mechanisms through which decisions affecting the strategy are made.

Framework focuses on risk transparency

The framework reflects the view that a vault’s risk cannot be determined solely by examining the assets held at a particular point in time. Market conditions, liquidity, management decisions, blockchain infrastructure, and protocol dependencies can all influence the ability of investors to preserve the value of their positions.

By combining these factors into a standardized forward-looking assessment, S&P Global aims to give institutions a more consistent way to compare risks across blockchain-based lending vaults and strengthen investment governance.

The approach could become more relevant as institutional investors increase their participation in onchain lending. The rapid increase in deposits means more capital is being exposed to decisions involving asset selection, liquidity management, smart contracts and governance structures.

S&P Global has emphasized that a VRA should not be interpreted as a conventional credit rating. The assessment also does not evaluate the level or attractiveness of a vault’s yield.

That distinction is important for investors because a higher return does not necessarily indicate lower risk. Similarly, a risk assessment does not convert a blockchain lending strategy into a conventional fixed-income investment.

Institutional bridge to decentralized markets

The launch represents an effort to apply established risk-analysis practices to a segment of decentralized finance that has expanded significantly in a relatively short period.

S&P Global has indicated that independent risk assessments could help address growing institutional demand for clearer analysis as digital assets become more integrated with traditional financial markets.

The framework may be particularly relevant to institutions seeking to evaluate onchain lending exposure under formal investment and governance policies. A standardized assessment can provide an additional analytical layer when institutions compare different vault structures and strategies.

S&P Global said it plans to publish initial Vault Risk Assessments in future announcements, but its Oct. 4 release did not specify which vaults will be covered, when the first assessments will appear, or what eligibility criteria will apply.

The launch therefore establishes the methodology rather than providing immediate assessments of individual vaults. As the market continues to expand, the framework could give institutional participants another tool for examining risks that are not readily captured by traditional measures of yield or asset quality.

The development also highlights the growing overlap between traditional financial risk analysis and decentralized market infrastructure, as investors seek more standardized methods to evaluate blockchain-based financial products.
