Visa Partners With ADI Foundation to Explore Blockchain Payments

Collaboration targets digital asset payments without replacing existing systems

Visa has entered into a partnership with Abu Dhabi-based ADI Foundation to examine how blockchain infrastructure could be integrated with its global payments network, as financial institutions and payment companies continue to explore the potential role of digital assets in mainstream transactions.

The collaboration is focused on developing potential digital payment solutions and supporting digital asset transactions while maintaining compatibility with existing financial infrastructure. The initiative follows a Memorandum of Cooperation between the two organizations and is currently exploratory rather than a confirmed commercial launch.

Visa and ADI Foundation will explore blockchain-based payment solutions designed to work alongside existing financial infrastructure, with the broader objective of supporting digital asset transactions through established payment networks.

The agreement does not identify a specific blockchain network, stablecoin, or digital asset that will be used as part of the initiative. It also does not provide a launch schedule or indicate when a production-ready service could become available.

Exploring blockchain integration

The partnership comes as payment networks and financial institutions increasingly examine blockchain technology as a potential layer for moving and settling digital value. Blockchain-based systems can provide programmable transactions and alternative settlement mechanisms, while established payment networks offer extensive infrastructure connecting consumers, merchants, banks and other financial institutions.

Visa and ADI Foundation are expected to examine how these capabilities could work together rather than positioning blockchain infrastructure as a replacement for existing payment systems.

This approach could allow digital asset-related services to operate within familiar financial channels. For consumers and businesses, that could eventually mean access to blockchain-enabled payment functions without requiring a complete shift away from conventional financial infrastructure.

The current agreement, however, does not establish a specific product. Details regarding transaction types, supported digital assets, technical architecture, and regulatory structure have not been disclosed.

ADI focuses on institutional blockchain adoption

ADI Foundation is based in Abu Dhabi and has focused on supporting institutional adoption of blockchain technology in the Middle East and North Africa region. Its involvement gives the collaboration a regional dimension as financial institutions and governments across the MENA market examine applications for blockchain and digital assets.

Abu Dhabi has emerged as a significant center for digital asset and blockchain activity, supported by efforts to develop regulatory and institutional frameworks for emerging financial technologies.

For ADI Foundation, working with Visa provides an opportunity to explore blockchain applications alongside one of the world’s largest payment networks. For Visa, the partnership offers another avenue to investigate how digital asset infrastructure can be incorporated into payment ecosystems in an important financial region.

The partnership could help evaluate how blockchain-based settlement and digital assets can complement established payment rails, potentially creating new options for financial institutions and businesses without requiring them to abandon existing systems.

Part of Visa’s broader digital asset strategy

The agreement also fits within Visa’s broader exploration of digital assets and blockchain technology. The payments company has been involved in various initiatives examining stablecoins, tokenized assets and blockchain-based payment infrastructure as the financial industry evaluates alternatives to traditional settlement mechanisms.

The latest collaboration is more limited in scope than a formal product launch because neither organization has announced a specific blockchain network, stablecoin, or commercial service.

The absence of those details means the initiative remains at the exploration stage. Further development would likely depend on technical assessments, regulatory considerations, market demand, and the ability to integrate blockchain infrastructure with Visa’s existing network.

The agreement establishes a framework for continued exploration rather than committing Visa and ADI Foundation to a specific blockchain product, making future technical and commercial decisions dependent on the outcome of the collaboration.

The partnership nevertheless reflects a growing effort to connect traditional payment infrastructure with blockchain-based financial technology. If the exploration produces viable applications, the organizations could potentially develop services that bring digital asset functionality closer to established payment channels while preserving the infrastructure already used by financial institutions and businesses.

For now, the agreement signals continued institutional interest in combining blockchain capabilities with global payment networks, without confirming a specific product, asset, or launch date.
