KPMG Physically Inspects Every Gold Bar in Reserve Review

Tether has completed what it described as its largest inaugural financial audit, with accounting firm KPMG carrying out a physical inspection and verification of the company’s gold reserves. The review involved counting and examining each individual gold bar rather than relying solely on information supplied by custodians holding the assets.

The process was designed to provide direct confirmation that the gold backing Tether’s reserves exists and corresponds with the recorded reserve information. KPMG reportedly inspected the bars and checked their individual serial data, adding a physical verification layer to the financial review.

The audit provides direct evidence of the existence of Tether’s gold reserves and reduces reliance on third-party custodian reporting for confirmation of the underlying assets.

The approach represents a significant step in the verification of physical assets held as reserves for a major financial institution. Gold holdings can involve multiple layers of custody, documentation and reporting, making independent physical inspection an important component of establishing confidence in the assets supporting financial obligations.

Direct Verification Strengthens Reserve Transparency

Tether’s decision to have KPMG physically count and inspect every gold bar distinguishes the review from an assessment based primarily on balance sheets, custody statements or other documentation. By examining the physical assets and their identifying information, the audit process sought to establish a direct connection between the reported reserves and the gold actually held.

Serial numbers also provide an important mechanism for identifying individual bars. Matching those identifiers with financial records can help auditors determine whether the physical holdings correspond with the assets recorded in the company’s accounts.

The development comes as reserve transparency has become an increasingly important issue across digital-asset markets. Companies issuing digital currencies and other blockchain-based financial products have faced growing expectations to demonstrate that assets supporting their liabilities are actually held and appropriately accounted for.

For users and institutional participants, stronger reserve verification can provide additional information when assessing the financial position of an issuer. It can also help reduce uncertainty surrounding whether reported assets are backed by identifiable and verifiable holdings.

Audit Sets Higher Standard for Physical Asset Verification

The scale of the inspection also gives the development broader significance beyond Tether’s own reserve reporting. Physical verification of large quantities of gold requires auditors to establish procedures for identifying, counting and reconciling individual assets with financial records.

No rock was left unturned.
Tether has all the gold it says it has.
Now reviewed by KPMG.

How many financial institutions or governments can actually say that?

By requiring physical confirmation of every gold bar, the review establishes a more rigorous standard for verifying precious-metal reserves than approaches based only on custodian declarations or financial documentation.

The audit could also influence expectations for how companies with substantial physical-asset reserves demonstrate financial backing in the future. As digital-asset firms expand their exposure to traditional commodities and other real-world assets, independent verification may become an increasingly important part of their reporting practices.

Tether’s latest audit therefore represents more than a routine accounting exercise. The physical inspection provides a direct method of confirming the existence and identification of the gold underlying its reported reserves while offering users and counterparties greater visibility into the assets supporting the company’s financial position.

The completion of the inspection marks a notable development in reserve transparency, combining independent financial auditing with physical verification of the underlying gold holdings.
